Drawing inspiration from Northern Soul, the Ben Sherman AW18 collection brought the iconic subculture to life at London Fashion Week Men’s. The collection celebrates Ben Sherman’s heritage, paying homage to classic mod silhouettes and an ethos rooted in music.
Every weekend, British youth “night-owls” would be drawn to Northern Soul clubs to dance all night to soul 45’s. Dance is a key direction of the AW18 collection, highlighted through the striking black and white imagery of Brian Cannon, a talented photographer known for his work commissioned by the band Oasis during their early years. His images that captured the heart of the Northern Soul scene inspired the collection, showcased across an assortment of printed tees, conversation polos, and shirts.
The collection also boasts the eclectic character of “night-owls,” mixing textures, autumnal colors, and retro badges, patches, and pins. We salute the dancers who mastered their endless spins and dramatic high-kicks, reinterpreting their passion through playful slogans and prints throughout the collection. Some sartorial standouts include the pictorial owl knitted sweater and eccentric “night-owl” designs.
Ben Sherman collaborated with Henry Holland on a capsule rang of unisex separates that play at the intersection of quirky prints and playful garment details. The Ben Sherman X House of Holland collaboration is a conceptual expression of Holland’s creative flair and Ben Sherman’s retro street culture.
